RECYCLING
As a company Dick’s Carpet has been recycling for years. Over the past ten years, we have recycled more than 673,920 yards of carpet and pad. 6,000 Ft of plastic, 75,000 Ft of cardboard, 2,556 Ft of paper and office supplies. All of our paper is put in a recycle bin and picked up once or twice a month at a cost to us of $850.00 per store per year. Just thinking about how we as a company contribute to our carbon footprint can become exhausting. We have a semi truck trailer parked in our lot at our Oakland location the truck is filled with carpet that has been pulled up from our previous installs and then taken to Los Angeles where they shred it boil it and make it into pad. The pallets that we accumulate are sent back to the distributors closing the loop so they can be reused again. The sad truth to this all; is that the majority of companies won’t go the extra step to recycle because recycling becomes a costly project.
Well folks there is some good news: after years of not caring the flooring industry is finally coming around.
Both Shaw Industries
www.shawgreenedge.com
and Mohawk Flooring
www.mohawkgreenworks.com have come up with a new yarn system. Carpet in the past could only be recycled into pad. With new technology the nylon can be retrived from discarded carpet, broken down, bleached and woven into new carpet!
